Brian Clark to Represent Iowa at Leaders Forum

Brian Clark, Principal with Confluence, has been selected to be part of a Leaders Round Table discussion on the future of the profession, held in Chicago May 12, 2010. Of the 20 landscape architects chosen from around the country, Brian will represent the Midwest and provide regional insight into current economic realities, how firms are responding, and what the future holds for the landscape architecture profession.

Conclusions formed by this discussion will be published in a whitepaper and presented to design professionals through the Landscape Architecture Foundation.

Confluence Selected to Develop Master Plan for Missouri Innovation Park in Blue Springs

Article featured in the Kansas City Business Journal

Blue Springs Growth Initiative Inc., an entity created to manage development of the proposed 500-acre Missouri Innovation Park in Blue Springs, announced the addition of a design team to complete the project’s master plan.

The team includes Treanor Architects PA, a full-service architecture firm with an office in Kansas City; Confluence, a landscape architecture and planning firm with an office in Kansas City; and Olsson Associates, an engineering firm with local offices in Olathe and Overland Park.

Confluence taking the LEED...Exam

In February Confluence brought in a trainer to host a two-day class as preparation for our staff members to take the LEED AP Exam for New Construction. Since then eight people have tested and passed to become LEED Accredited Professionals. We now have a total of eleven LEED AP's made up of Principals, Landscape Architects, and Administrative Proffesionals.

Party Time CONFLUENCE Style

CONFLUENCE Des Moines held another successful Open House celebrating clients, projects, and all things nutty...or Nutters to be more precise! It was the giant papier-mâché squirrel statue, Nutters (created by Aaron Graves), that was the hot topic of the evening and will surely become a permanent fixture in the office.

CONFLUENCE Continues to be "Eco-Friendly"

Seth Gray's work on the Drake University/28th Street Streetscape project was highlighted in an article entitled "Drake Building Eco-Friendly Walkway" which ran in the Des Moines Register. This project will serve not only to enhance and unify the Drake University Campus but also incorporates sustainable practices, by using 'green solutions' to manage storm water through permeable pavers, rain gardens and native plantings.

Our Wells Fargo Campus Project graced the cover of the Summer 2008 edition of "Western", a magazine published by the Western Nursery & Landscape Association. The feature article highlights the design of this project's native central park spine that serves as a unique organizing element.

Chris Cline authored a guest column entitled "Form-Based Code Can Make Our Area More Sustainable" which was featured in the Kansas City Business Journal. Confluence's Chris Della Vedova and Matt Carlile met up with Iowa Senator Charles Grassley in Washington D.C. to lobby on behalf of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Also in attendance of the May 8th meeting was West Des Moines Parks and Recrection Director, Gary Scott.

That's How We Roll!

Congratulations to Team BCA as they took 2nd Place in the spring Tuesday Perfect League at Val Lanes. The bowlers, Ben Sandell, Aaron (Eagle Claw) Graves, Chris Della Vedova, Denise Ballesteros, Seth Gray, Liz Nielsen, and Matt Carlile, showed tremendous improvement in this, their second league outing since forming the team in 2007.

Naturally Sioux Falls
BCA's own Chad Kucker is quoted in the Spring 2008 issue of Building Stone Magazine. The magazine's feature article "A Natural Choice: Landscaping Trends" discusses the use of natural stone in site design. BCA's Sioux Falls Veterans' Memorial Park was highlighted for the use of salvaged stones.

Playing it Safe in Kansas City
Terry Berkbuegler and Heidi Pollmann have co-authored an article entitled "Successful places, safe spaces" which is being featured in the April 2008 issue of the APWA Reporter, an American Public Works Association publication. The issue will be available soon to view online.

Sioux Falls Shines with ASLA Honors!

BCA Sioux Falls was recently awarded five out of eight total design competition honors given by the Great Plains Chapter of the American Society of Lanscape Architects (ASLA). The competition encompassed five separate categories and drew entries from North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Recognition for Brian

The College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU) recently honored Brian with their 2007 Design Achievement Award. This award, established in 1988, is given as recognition for outstanding creative and professional achievements of ISU alumni in the fields of architecture, art and design, community and regional planning, and landscaped architecture.

Projects Enhance Urban Revitalization

Groundbreaking in Kansas City
September 13, 2007 a groundbreaking ceremony kicked off upcoming improvements to the Kansas City River Market district. BCA's 2nd Street streetscape design is an essential part of turning what was once a dirt road into a vibrant urban development.

Dedication in Des Moines
The Hansen Company Triangle Park opened on October 16, 2007 with a dedication ceremony for the park's focal point art piece, a sculpture by Sally Pettus entitled "Quantum Leaf". Hansen Triangle is one of a series of downtown improvements encopassed in the Prinipal Riverwalk which is designed to attract pedestrian traffic to downtown.

BCA Wins Big!

Getting off to a great start in 2007, BCA has recently been recognized for design and planning efforts on five projects by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The Central States and Iowa Chapters of ASLA have bestowed six awards on BCA including their highest honor the Award of Excellence for the Wells Fargo West Des Moines Campus. BCA looks forward to continued success on future projects throughout the year.
