A multi-disciplinary partnership, led by Confluence, provided visioning and final design services for the replacement of the reknowned Garden City "Big Pool". The iconic size of the original pool could support a ski boat pulling skiiers.
This historic pool was the largest hand-dug public pool in the world when built and served the residents of Garden City for 100 years. To build support for the creation of a new aquatic center to replace the original pool, our design team informed the community about ideas, costs and benefits of a new facility, which generated excitement about the new possibilities.
Confluence facilitated the design process and collaborated with the City to identify new programmatic elements to incorporate into the complex while creating a signature facility that serves as an honorable replacement to the beloved "Big Pool". The new facility will include a zero-depth entry pool, lazy river, slides, splash pad and 50m competition pool. The new aquatics center will be one of the first in the country to include two fly-high slides and an aquatics ninja course.
Our landscape architects also managed and facilitated community engagement throughout the design process to share information at key intervals while building support for the project. This included developing a new name and theme for the facility, the study of various thematic characters for branding, and establishment of color palettes to support the new theme. The aquatics center is slated to open on June 5, 2021.
