The master plan elements include a realignment of the park’s loop drive for safer pedestrian and vehicular movements while creating gathering nodes/trailheads and pedestrian plaza spaces.
Confluence led a multi-disciplinary team to develop a new entry gateway for the most visited park in the state of Kansas. Shawnee Mission Park has over two million visitors each year and the rich history surrounding the park is attributed to the first Johnson County Parks Director and World War I Hero, John Barkley. As part of the design process, extensive public engagement efforts were conducted to gather feedback from department staff, board members, and residents. The result of the planning and input efforts led to a successful balancing of the historic character of the park with contemporary materials allowing the design team to reimagine the John Barkley Memorial Plaza and park entry into a timeless and memorable space for years to come. The new entry and plaza were opened to the public in the fall of 2020 to rave reviews by the park users.
