The city plaza is home to “Quantum Leaf,” a bronze sculpture that symbolizes a poetic site for meditation.
Confluence was selected to design Hansen Triangle, a city plaza located along the western banks of the Des Moines River. The focal point of the plaza is a bronze sculpture by artist Sally Vagliano Pettus titled “Quantum Leaf.”
“Quantum Leaf” is a 15-foot diameter cast bronze leaf that appears to float in a pool of water. With water spilling gently over its bowl-like form, the fountain provides a poetic site for meditation. The sculpture gives the viewer an image of nature that has served its purpose – a fallen leaf – that now functions with new vitality as a vessel of renewal.
Hansen Triangle was a collaboration between the Des Moines Art Center, Hansen Company and the City of Des Moines. Confluence collaborated closely with the artist on the placement of the sculpture to achieve her vision for the piece, an oversized dying leaf with curled edges resting in a shallow pool of water amongst a grove of trees. The plaza space also features various seating options, decorative paving and lighting.
