42-Story Building / 9,000sf Rooftop Terrace
Chicago, Illinois
This apartment development’s urban landscape consists of streetscape at grade and an extensive 6th floor amenity deck to create a relaxing and functional outdoor space for residents.
Elements of the amenity deck include the “Michigan Avenue Terrace" - a paved area with a mixture of movable and built-in furniture overlooking the street. An architectural trellis provides structure and shade, while a central green space is raised slightly above the paving to figuratively elevate the lawn panel. An exterior kitchen has integrated gas grills and sinks, dining tables and chairs, and lounge furniture. A bocce court is provided adjacent to the lawn panel, with a fire pit lounge and a linear fire element surrounded by lounge seating areas. A dog run is also provided with interactive play elements for dogs.
The streetscape consists of generous sidewalks along Michigan Avenue to accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic and “parkway planters” with trees and pedestrian-scale planting below. The parkway planters include low curbs to protect from salt damage and ornamental metal railings.
