Fred Richards Nature + Ecology Park Master Plan Receives Honor Award

Wednesday, June 10, 2020

By listening to the community and collaborating with City staff, a visionary master plan was created to transform Fred Richards Nature + Ecology Park from a nine-hole municipal golf course into a nature-based community park. The park design utilizes a precedent-setting approach to wetland banking that provides a funding source, valuable flood protection, and an ecological jewel in a highly developed first-ring suburb. Community park needs are met in a new type of park that balances nature and ecosystem services along with recreation activities. Ecological and community health are balanced in a pioneering nature preserve – park hybrid design.

The Minnesota Chapter of ASLA recently awarded the plan with an Honor Award in the Design (Unbuilt) category! Congratulations to the City of Edina Parks and Recreation and our project partners!
