Saturday, April 24 marked the ribbon cutting ceremony for our project, the John Barkley Memorial Plaza and park entry at Shawnee Mission Park in Johnson County, Kansas.
John Barkley, a World War I verteran, served as the Johnson County Parks and Recreation's first superintendent in 1956. This new memorial plaza created in his honor includes a shade pavilion, seating, bike rack and repair station, and more.
The result of the planning and input efforts led to a successful balancing of the historic character of the park with contemporary materials allowing the design team to reimagine the John Barkley Memorial Plaza and park entry into a timeless and memorable space for years to come.
